What the Venus period brings

The Venus period lasts twenty years, the longest of the cycle, and brings relationships, beauty, comfort and creativity forward. Partnerships, marriage, art, music, design and the pleasures of home often feature, along with improvements in comfort and style of living. It is a good time to build harmony and to enjoy what you have created. Balance between enjoyment and responsibility keeps it graceful. Venus's condition in your chart shows how smoothly these themes unfold.

How the Vimshottari cycle works

Vimshottari Dasha divides a 120-year life cycle into nine planetary periods: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. The period you are born into is set by the ruler of your birth Nakshatra, and the balance left at birth depends on how far the Moon had moved through that star. Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas in the same order, starting with its own planet.

Reading a period in your own chart

A period gives the results of its planet as placed in your chart: the houses it rules and occupies, its dignity and the planets it joins or aspects. Transits of Saturn and Jupiter during the period add timing. The general readings here describe the planet's natural themes; the house positions in your horoscope decide where they show up.

The nine Antardashas inside the Venus Mahadasha
AntardashaLengthReading
Venus3 y 4 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. Venus's Antardasha brings these themes into relationships, beauty, comforts and finances. When a planet runs its own sub-period inside its own period, its nature is felt at full strength, for good and for ill.
Sun1 y 0 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. The Sun's Antardasha brings these themes towards recognition, leadership and dealings with those in power. The sub-period lord is a natural enemy of the period lord, so this stretch asks for tact, patience and the remedies of both planets.
Moon1 y 8 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. The Moon's Antardasha brings these themes into feeling, family life, travel and contact with the public. The sub-period lord is neutral to the period lord, so results follow how each is placed in the chart.
Mars1 y 2 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. Mars's Antardasha brings these themes into quick action, competition, property and physical effort. The sub-period lord is neutral to the period lord, so results follow how each is placed in the chart.
Rahu3 y 0 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. Rahu's Antardasha brings these themes into restlessness, foreign links and unconventional opportunity. The sub-period lord is a natural friend of the period lord, so the two cooperate and this stretch usually runs smoothly.
Jupiter2 y 8 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. Jupiter's Antardasha brings these themes towards guidance, blessings, children and good counsel. The sub-period lord is a natural enemy of the period lord, so this stretch asks for tact, patience and the remedies of both planets.
Saturn3 y 2 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. Saturn's Antardasha brings these themes into responsibility, long effort, structure and tests of patience. The sub-period lord is a natural friend of the period lord, so the two cooperate and this stretch usually runs smoothly.
Mercury2 y 10 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. Mercury's Antardasha brings these themes into study, paperwork, business and new connections. The sub-period lord is a natural friend of the period lord, so the two cooperate and this stretch usually runs smoothly.
Ketu1 y 2 mUnder Venus's Mahadasha the larger chapter is about love, comfort, art and the pleasures of life. Ketu's Antardasha brings these themes into reflection, sudden insight and quiet separation from what is done. The sub-period lord is neutral to the period lord, so results follow how each is placed in the chart.

Common questions

How long is the Venus Mahadasha?

The Venus Mahadasha lasts 20 years in the Vimshottari system. If you were born in it, only the balance remaining at birth applies to that first period.

What is the order of Antardashas in the Venus Mahadasha?

The sub-periods run in the Vimshottari order starting with Venus itself. The table on this page lists all nine with their lengths.

Is the Venus Mahadasha good?

It depends on how Venus is placed in your chart: its house, sign, dignity and aspects. A well-placed Venus gives its best results; a stressed one asks for patience and supportive practice.

How do I know when my Venus Mahadasha starts?

Your birth chart calculates the exact start and end dates of every period from the Moon's position at birth. Cast it free and open the Dasha tab.

How is an Antardasha length calculated?

Multiply the Mahadasha years by the sub-period planet's years and divide by 120. For example, the Venus sub-period of the Venus Mahadasha is (20 × 20) ÷ 120 years.

What remedies are suggested during the Venus Mahadasha?

Traditional supports include the planet's mantra, charity on its weekday and steady routines. Gemstones should only be worn after a full chart review.

Does KP astrology use the same Dasha?

Yes. KP uses Vimshottari periods too, and adds sub-lords within each Nakshatra to time events more finely.

Can two people in the same Mahadasha have different experiences?

Yes, because the planet rules and occupies different houses in each chart. The period always works through your own houses.
