Choosing a baby name by Nakshatra and tradition

In many Indian families, a child's name begins with a syllable linked to the Nakshatra and Pada of the Moon at birth. This tool finds that starting sound from the birth details, then suggests names that begin with it, with meanings, the deity or quality behind each name, and its numerology value.

The naming syllable

Each of the twenty-seven Nakshatras has four Padas, and each Pada carries one sound, the Nama Akshara. Ashwini gives Chu, Che, Cho and La; Rohini gives O, Va, Vi and Vu; Uttara Phalguni gives Te, To, Pa and Pi. A child born in the third Pada of Rohini would traditionally receive a name beginning with Vi, such as Vikram, Vishnu or Vidya. The tool finds the Pada from the exact time of birth.

The naming ceremony

The Namakarana is usually held on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, or on another day chosen with the Panchangam. The father or an elder whispers the name into the child's right ear, often after a short prayer to the family deity. Tamil families also hold the Thottil ceremony, placing the child in a cradle for the first time on the same day.

Beyond the Nakshatra sound

Many families also consider the family deity, a grandparent's name, the meaning of the name, and how it sounds in the home language. Some pick a formal Nakshatra name for religious use and a separate everyday name. Both customs are honoured in the suggestions.

Numerology and balance

Each suggestion shows its Chaldean number. Families who follow numerology often look for a name number that agrees with the birth number, the day of the month. The tool marks names that do, without excluding the others.

Meanings in many languages

Names are listed with their Sanskrit or Tamil roots and meanings, and with spelling in your chosen script, so grandparents and the birth certificate agree.

Choosing well

Shortlist three or four names, say them aloud with the family name, and check their meaning in each language spoken at home. A name is carried for life, so tradition advises calm discussion rather than hurry.
